Baguio City:The City Health Services Office (CHSO) has effectively reached nearly 2,000 residents in various barangays through its eye care program aimed at promoting early detection and preventing vision problems.
According to Philippines News Agency, City Health Officer Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes stated that as of August, 1,947 residents have benefitted from community-based eye care services, with 98 individuals referred for further assessment.
Dr. Brillantes emphasized the importance of eye check-ups, encouraging residents of all ages to utilize the free basic vision screening services available at the city's 16 District Health Centers. The city government has integrated eye care into its basic health services following the passage of the Eye Health Ordinance and the creation of the Baguio City Comprehensive Eye Health Team.
The eye health team, supported by local ophthalmologists and optometrists, provides extensive eye care and conducts school-based vision screenings, urging parental support for early detection of eye issues in children. Those diagnosed with potential problems are referred for further evaluation to ensure immediate and appropriate care.
To enhance early detection, the CHSO has organized training sessions for health workers, midwives, and nursing students to identify common eye conditions and deliver primary eye care. Village health workers are crucial as the first point of contact for health advice and referrals.
Additionally, the team is orienting teachers to help identify vision problems among students. Dr. Aldo Mar Cariaga from Benguet General Hospital and Medical Center highlighted that cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment in the Philippines, followed by refractive errors, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Cariaga noted that approximately 22.9 million Filipinos face eye health issues, with over 4 million adults having undiagnosed conditions. He advocated for reduced screen time, more outdoor activities, and regular eye examinations to prevent further vision loss and improve quality of life.
