Baguio city: Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced the resumption of accepting proposals for the development of the Baguio City public market, utilizing the current terms of reference. The decision aims to invite various cooperatives and market vendors to organize and submit their proposals.

According to Philippines News Agency, the move creates opportunities for other interested entities to present their bid proposals. The initiative follows opposition from market vendors and traders to SM Prime Holdings' proposed development plan, which was criticized for potential 'mallification' and 'privatization.' This opposition was bolstered by support from other stakeholders and a signature campaign.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. decided to withdraw its proposal, citing the inability of the city's executive and legislative departments, public market vendors, and stakeholders to reach a consensus on the development approach. The mayor emphasized the local government's commitment to evaluating suitable options with stakeholders that align with required standards.

Originally, the unsolicited proposal by SM Prime Holdings was set for consideration by the city council on January 9, 2026, but was withdrawn on January 3. Mayor Magalong has advocated for the market's redevelopment to address issues such as sanitation, disorganization, and subleasing.
