Baguio: The city is planning to allocate funds for mandatory deworming among learners, alongside required lessons on proper handwashing.

According to Philippines News Agency, Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. emphasized that deworming should be mandatory for all public kindergarten, elementary, and secondary students, including children in public daycare centers. He stated that this program must become an annual initiative of the city health services office (CHSO) to protect health, improve nutrition, and support cognitive and physical development among children.

The Department of Health (DOH)-Cordillera highlighted the importance of deworming in eliminating soil-transmitted intestinal worms in children and preventing malnutrition and stunting. It is a safe and cost-effective initiative that promotes healthy growth and enhances the long-term well-being of children.

The program targets children aged one to 19 years, with deworming medicines administered at least twice a year. The councilor also underscored the significance of hygiene and sanitation measures.

Activities will focus on proper handwashing before and after meals and after using the toilet, maintaining clipped fingernails, wearing footwear, and ensuring access to and proper use of sanitary toilet facilities as mandated by the Baguio Sanitation Code. Additionally, safe food handling and drinking potable water will be emphasized.

These activities are to be included as a regular program of the CHSO and the DepEd-Baguio, with funds incorporated into their annual budget.
