Baguio: The city government is eyeing the mandatory installation of bidets in toilets of public and private establishments for improved sanitation and public convenience.
According to Philippines News Agency, Councilor Leandro Yangot emphasized the importance of proper sanitation as a key component of public health and safety, benefiting both residents and tourists in Baguio. In an interview on Wednesday, Yangot highlighted the necessity for toilets to be equipped with running water for flushing and handwashing, as well as bidets.
Yangot has filed a proposal to the city council to implement mandatory toilet cleanliness standards not only for public restrooms but also for those in private establishments such as malls. Additionally, he stressed the importance of proper lighting and safety features, including non-slip flooring and grab bars, to accommodate persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens.
The proposed measure aligns with the mandates of Batas Pambansa Bilang 344 (BP 344), which ensures the accessibility of facilities for PWDs and the elderly. Yangot stated that, upon approval of the ordinance, violators would face penalties ranging from PHP500 to PHP2,000. Repeat offenders could also encounter delays in their business permit renewals until they obtain a certificate of compliance from the city government.
