BARMM Elections Seen as Foundation for Regional Stability and Growth

Manila: Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento has emphasized the importance of wise voting in the upcoming Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections scheduled for September 14. He urged voters to recognize this opportunity as a pivotal moment that would establish a stable government in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sarmiento described the parliamentary elections as a crucial juncture for the region, marking a "defining moment" that enables residents to select leaders who will guide the region into a "new and exciting chapter" of its history. He stated that these elections should be perceived not merely as a political exercise but as an essential step in the broader process of nation-building.

Sarmiento further explained that a peaceful and credible election would be instrumental in establishing a stable government capable of driving economic growth in the Bangsamoro. He highlighted the potential for the BARMM to significantly contribute to the nation's gross domestic product and internal revenue, given its commercial, investment, and tourism prospects. With enhanced internal revenue collections and its Block Grant, the regional government is expected to improve the quality of life for the Bangsamoro people.

He called upon all stakeholders in the BARMM to collaborate with security forces to ensure a peaceful election process. Sarmiento also urged academic institutions and civil society groups to advocate for voter education, emphasizing the importance of informed participation in the democratic process.

While acknowledging the political dynamics in the region, Sarmiento expressed that healthy competition is indicative of a robust democracy. He stressed the importance of aligning efforts with the commitments made under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB). The goal, he stated, is to create a Bangsamoro where every family has access to essential services, including reliable transportation, sustainable livelihoods, quality education, and a robust healthcare system.

As the elections approach, Sarmiento encouraged respect for the results and called on all candidates, parties, and stakeholders to reconcile post-election. He emphasized the need to foster a stronger sense of community throughout the region, ensuring that all residents, including Indigenous Peoples, are included in the development process. While elections are temporary, Sarmiento highlighted that the Bangsamoro identity and its people's shared future remain permanent.
