Manila: Beneficiaries of the "Benteng Bigas Meron Na" program in this city said on Wednesday that the PHP20-per-kilogram rice eases their financial burden and meets their expectations in terms of quality.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marivic Masenas, a solo parent from Purok 5, Barangay 18, Cabangan West, noted that the rice compares favorably with more expensive commercial varieties. She mentioned that the quality is excellent and even better than some first-class rice, which tends to spoil quickly. Masenas shared that the subsidized rice remains fresh even when left overnight after cooking, unlike some higher-priced varieties.

Masenas highlighted that the lower price allows her to stretch her budget for other household needs, reducing her previous expenditure of PHP60 per kilogram. She expressed gratitude towards President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for the initiative, hoping it continues to support solo parents and low-income families.

Meanwhile, Clarissa Gaberia, a beneficiary from Barangay 16, Washington Drive, described the rice as white, fluffy when cooked, and of good quality. With her husband working as a construction worker, the savings from the affordable rice enable their family to allocate more budget for other food items and their children's school allowance. Gaberia mentioned that the rice usually lasts their household for about three weeks.

Gaberia also expressed her appreciation for President Marcos, acknowledging the assistance the program provides to families dealing with the high cost of rice. Data from the National Food Authority in Bicol indicates that from July 13 to 21, a total of 1,639 bags of rice were released under the program, allowing beneficiaries to purchase rice at a lower cost amid prevailing market prices.

The "Benteng Bigas Meron Na" program is part of the national government's efforts to improve access to affordable rice while helping low-income households cope with rising food expenses.
