Benguet Residents Applaud Marcos’ Initiative to Investigate Flood Control Projects

Benguet: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s recent order to investigate "sloppy" flood control projects has garnered positive reactions from the residents of Benguet, as highlighted in his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA). The directive follows concerns over inadequate flood infrastructure that has significantly impacted the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Benguet locals, including overseas Filipino worker Melanie Ortega, expressed support for the President's resolve to hold accountable those responsible for substandard projects. Ortega, currently in the country due to adverse weather conditions, emphasized the importance of government accountability, especially as flooding results in loss of life, property damage, and livelihood disruptions.

During his SONA, President Marcos criticized flood control projects that he observed as either poorly executed or non-existent. He condemned the malpractice in project management, highlighting the prevalence of corruption involving kickbacks and other unethical practices. Marcos urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to compile a list of flood control projects initiated since his administration began in 2022.

Retiree Antonio Domesag echoed the President's sentiments, expressing hope that the investigation would lead to accountability for those responsible for the extensive flooding issues. Bokod, Benguet Mayor Eric Donn Ignacio further supported the President's stance, stating that legal action against officials involved in poor project execution is essential to reinforce the principle that public service is a trust that must be upheld.
