Bokod: The municipality of Bokod in Benguet is actively pursuing an amicable resolution to its boundary disputes with neighboring towns, a move that could unlock at least PHP30 million in additional annual national tax allocation (NTA). Mayor Erik Donn Ignacio emphasized the urgency of addressing these disputes, as they have hindered municipalities from accessing revenues that could support essential infrastructure projects and government initiatives.

According to Philippines News Agency, the unresolved boundaries have resulted in significant financial losses, with approximately PHP60 million to PHP70 million in potential funds remaining unutilized. These funds, which could be used for building schools, multipurpose buildings, and other beneficial programs, are expected to increase as NTA allocations rise annually. Mayor Ignacio highlighted the importance of resolving these disputes promptly to prevent further complications for future generations, as historical knowledge and information risk becoming lost over time.

During a recent mayor's league meeting, Bokod, along with 12 other municipalities, agreed to prioritize settling the boundary disputes. Mayor Ignacio, serving his first term, expressed a desire to resolve these issues within his tenure to avoid passing them on to future leaders. The municipalities are considering a collaborative approach, focusing on the preferences and happiness of affected residents rather than engaging in extended legal battles. Bokod has already received support from Atok officials and plans to meet with representatives from Kabayan and Itogon, the latter of which has seen the dispute escalate to the Benguet Provincial Board.
