KUCHING, The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has undertaken a huge responsibility to craft an artificial intelligence (AI)related course and activities to equip media practitioners with the latest skills in carrying out their assignments. Bernama chief executive officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said it was a huge recognition for the news agency as AI-related courses were expensive because of the new technology, and many media practitioners required such courses to help them in their work. 'So when Bernama, which was set up in 1967, is given the duty to prepare and arrange the course and training, InsyaAllah, we will do our best,' she told reporters after attending the highlight of the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2024 here today. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced an RM1 million allocation for Bernama to organise the AI-related course and training when he officiated the event today, stating that the allocation was in line with recommendations that media practitioners would u nderstand and master the use of technology, including AI, in their work. The Prime Minister also announced an additional allocation of RM1 million for Tabung Kasih@HAWANA for use next year to help former and current media practitioners in need. Nur-ul Afida expressed her thanks over the allocation, stating that those in the media industry, whether retired or currently serving, who suffered critical illnesses would incur high expenses. 'Based on our meetings with other media friends, those with critical illness incur high expenses for dialysis, cancer treatments, and they deserve to be given more in terms of donation. 'So we hope to be able to help them and others like them with this additional allocation,' she added. Tabung Kasih@HAWANA was set up during the HAWANA 2023 celebrations with the aim of helping former and current media practitioners in need, and is an initiative by the Communications Ministry and implemented by Bernama.
