BFP-10 Records Lowest Fuel Use in PH Despite Rising Fires

Northern mindanao: The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 10, covering Northern Mindanao, has recorded the lowest fuel consumption among all regional offices nationwide, even as fire incidents continue to rise in the area.

According to Philippines News Agency, BFP-10 Director Fire Chief Supt. Romel Tradio noted that the reduced fuel usage is a result of strict austerity measures imposed by the BFP central office in light of ongoing fuel constraints. Despite operating on a quarterly fuel allocation of only PHP2 million, the region has managed to remain below consumption targets, even with increased operational demands.

Data from BFP-10 indicates that fire incidents in Northern Mindanao have risen by 23.76 percent, totaling 250 cases compared to 202 during the same period last year. Structural fires constitute the majority, with 179 incidents this year, an increase from the previous 136 cases.

Despite the rise in fire incidents, the total estimated damage value has dropped by 51.78 percent to PHP39.3 million, compared to PHP81.3 million last year. Tradio explained that the lower damage value is due to the nature of recent fires, many of which occurred in residential areas with houses made of light materials, thus limiting financial losses.

The director warned that fire incidents might continue to increase until September, attributed to higher seasonal temperatures. "We remain vigilant and ready to respond, with support from our partner agencies and communities," Tradio stated.
