Bicol Churches Open as Shelters Ahead of Severe Tropical Storm Opong

Legazpi: Dioceses in the Bicol region are opening their churches for those who will be affected by Severe Tropical Storm Opong, which is expected to hit the region this weekend. In separate announcements, the Dioceses of Legazpi and Daet said they are ready to accept evacuees in all churches under their jurisdiction.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Legazpi diocese has urged parishes to open churches, chapels, parish halls, and other safe facilities to evacuees. The diocese has also activated Parish Disaster Response Committees (PaDReCom) in coordination with the Diocesan Commission on Social Concerns and the Social Action Center. Additionally, the public is being asked to pray as the storm approaches the province.

The Diocese of Daet has also announced that its churches are prepared to provide shelter to those displaced by the typhoon. The diocese has instructed the opening of parish halls, classrooms, or church buildings as temporary refuge should other safe evacuation centers be unavailable. They emphasized the importance of maintaining basic order, cleanliness, and safety.

Parish pastoral councils and barangay leaders in the affected areas have been directed to disseminate information about safety measures and mobilize parish volunteers. These volunteers will assist in relief preparations, identify vulnerable parishioners such as the elderly and persons with disabilities, and ensure their safety.

Similarly, the Diocese of Sorsogon is preparing for the impact of Opong. The diocese has called on parishes to mobilize under the leadership of the Commission on Service and Caritas to ensure community safety and readiness to extend pastoral and charitable support.

In response to the impending storm, the Diocese of Virac has asked the faithful to pray the Oratio Imperata, emphasizing the power of prayer during these uncertain times and urging them to seek divine mercy and protection.

The weather bureau has warned that Opong is threatening many areas in Luzon and the Visayas, including Metro Manila. The storm is expected to make landfall in Bicol, carrying torrential rain and strong winds.
