Bicol: The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) reported on Monday the seizure of a total of PHP4.54 million in evidence during its anti-illegal fishing operations conducted last week. The operations took place across the region from August 17 to 23, resulting in the arrest of 53 individuals involved in illicit fishing activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, PRO-5 units carried out 16 anti-illegal fishing operations throughout the Bicol region. Among the police provincial offices, the Masbate Police Provincial Office (PPO) achieved the highest value of confiscated items, totaling PHP3.8 million. This was followed by Camarines Sur PPO with PHP334,300, Catanduanes PPO with PHP200,000, Sorsogon PPO with PHP61,150, and Camarines Norte PPO with PHP50,600.

PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Erosito Miranda emphasized that illegal fishing poses a threat to both marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of law-abiding fishermen who rely on healthy and productive waters. He stated that these activities undermine the sustainability of the region's aquatic resources.

Brig. Gen. Miranda reaffirmed the commitment of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to protect the region's aquatic resources through continued law enforcement operations. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with partner agencies and local communities to safeguard these resources for current and future generations. Miranda also underscored the need for proactive police efforts against illegal fishing, particularly in coastal areas that are crucial for marine resources, community safety, and economic health.
