Legazpi City: Workers in the Bicol Region have expressed their gratitude towards the government, particularly the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-5), following the approval of a PHP40 wage increase by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB). This increase is set to benefit over 100,000 minimum wage earners across the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE-5 Director and RTWPB Chair Imelda Gatinao announced during a press conference that the wage adjustment will be implemented in two phases: an initial PHP20 increase effective April 5, followed by an additional PHP20 increase on December 1. Gatinao emphasized that the wage hike applies to all minimum wage earners in the private sector, irrespective of their position, designation, status, or the method by which their wages are paid. She highlighted the government's efforts to enhance support services for families, aiming to improve their living conditions.
Labor representative Dante Encinas, during the same press conference, explained the decision to implement the wage increase in two tranches. He noted that a one-time PHP40 increase could be burdensome for employers, leading to an additional PHP800 per month in costs, along with contributions to various social security and health programs. Encinas warned that pushing for higher wages might lead to business closures and potential job losses.
The reaction from workers has been generally positive, although concerns about the adequacy of the increase amidst rising living costs remain. James Fernandez, a working student from Barangay Bigaa, expressed his gratitude for the additional wages, noting that it would help with his daily expenses despite the persistent high prices of goods. Maintenance worker Sean Amador and laundry attendant Judy Baranquil echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the financial relief the increase provides in the face of inflation.
The RTWPB also issued an additional order granting a PHP1,000 monthly increase for domestic workers, raising their monthly salary to PHP6,000 in the region.
