Antique: The annual Binirayan Festival of Antique is set to spotlight the province's rich cultural heritage and history, with a series of events scheduled to kick off on December 1 and continue through December 29.
According to Philippines News Agency, the festival will commence with the opening of lights and a night market, culminating in a Karsadyahan, or merrymaking, at the end of the month. The 18 municipalities of the province will participate by setting up booths at Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park, showcasing their unique products and local attractions. Daily skills demonstrations, such as native mat and clay pot making, will highlight traditional crafts from Libertad and Sibalom towns.
A film festival, featuring works by Antique±o filmmakers and artists, will be held at Robinsons Place San Jose de Buenavista on December 13 and 14, depicting the way of life and beliefs of the local people. Celestino Dalumpines IV, Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office consultant, noted in a press conference that the festival serves as a celebration of the municipalities and their rich culture and history.
A key highlight of the festival includes the reenactment of the first Malay settlement in Barangay Malandog, Hamtic, set for December 15 following the opening salvo. Sammy Rubido, in charge of the reenactment, described it as a unique opportunity for spectators to experience the origins of the festival, which first took place in 1974. The reenactment will feature characters portraying the 10 Bornean datus, who will arrive in balangay sailboats and be welcomed with a ritual and dance drama along the shorelines, where 10 life-size monuments stand.
In addition to these events, the lighting of the First Malayan Settlement Torch will symbolize the province's historical significance. The presentation and sashing of Miss Binirayan and Datu of Antique will also take place on December 15. The festival will continue with the Malay Ati tribe competition, or Battle of Festivals, on December 20, involving participation from the 18 municipalities.
This year's theme, "Live the Legacy: Antique±o Spirit Shines in Binirayan Festival 2025," aims to honor the late governor Evelio B. Javier, the founder of the festival, celebrating the enduring spirit and cultural legacy of the Antique±o people.
