BIR Online Payments Now at 90%, Eyes Real-Time Tax Transactions

Manila: The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is accelerating its digital transformation through key modernization programs aimed at streamlining taxpayer services and enhancing transparency, as the agency builds on its strong collection performance in the first half of the year.

According to Philippines News Agency, approximately 90 percent of the payments are now online, as noted by BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. in a news release. The move towards digitalization is intended to minimize the need for physical visits to BIR offices and banks, allowing taxpayers to manage their obligations online.

Among the flagship initiatives are the nationwide rollout of e-lounges across district offices. These fully equipped hubs enable taxpayers to file, pay, and register electronically with the assistance of dedicated personnel. Lumagui expressed pride in this development, highlighting that the e-lounges are fully equipped with internet, printers, and staffed by dedicated examiners to assist taxpayers.

The BIR chief also discussed upcoming reforms aimed at strengthening real-time monitoring and taxpayer engagement. A significant project in this area is electronic invoicing, which ensures real-time communication between sellers, buyers, and the BIR. This system allows for immediate visibility of transactions as they occur.

Additionally, the BIR is enhancing its online registration and update system, which currently supports new business registrations and the issuance of digital taxpayer identification number (TIN) IDs. These efforts are part of the BIR's commitment to simplifying the tax settlement process for taxpayers.

Lumagui emphasized the agency's dedication to accessibility, noting their willingness to extend operating hours to accommodate taxpayers, as was done during the estate tax amnesty deadline. The BIR's proactive initiatives have contributed to exceeding its first-half revenue target of PHP1.5 trillion by 0.5 percent, demonstrating the effectiveness of their modernization efforts.
