BOC Intercepts PHP980-M Worth of Illicit Cigarettes at Cebu Wharf

Cebu: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) - Port of Cebu has successfully intercepted PHP980 million worth of illicit cigarettes hidden inside 25 20-foot container vans. The discovery was made at a private wharf in Mandaue City during an enforcement operation on July 2.

According to Philippines News Agency, the illegal tobacco shipments were identified through a coordinated effort involving the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police - Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG). The operation was authorized by a Letter of Authority (LOA) and Mission Order, executed under Section 224 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA). An ongoing investigation aims to uncover the identities of those responsible, trace the origin of the shipments, and assess the extent of legal violations committed.

Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the BOC's commitment to combating the illicit tobacco trade and smuggling activities. He stated, "The message of this operation is clear: the BOC will not stop its campaign against the illicit tobacco trade and all forms of smuggling." Commissioner Nepomuceno further assured that the agency will continue to enhance intelligence-driven enforcement operations, working closely with partner agencies to dismantle smuggling networks, protect legitimate businesses, and safeguard public funds.
