Boracay: Boracay Island welcomed its first cruise tourists this year, with the arrival of the Italian-flagged MS AIDAstella of the AIDA Cruiseline on Jan. 13. At least 2,019 guests out of the 3,120 passengers and crew disembarked the cruise ship and experienced the beauty of Boracay's white-sand beaches.
According to Philippines News Agency, for nine hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the tourists embraced the island's charm, exploring its pristine beaches, swimming in its turquoise waters, and immersing themselves in its culture. The Department of Tourism (DOT) 6 (Western Visayas) noted in a statement that a gentle rain added a touch of magic to their adventure.
A special highlight of the visit was the formal plaque exchange ceremony between DOT officials and the ship's captain, showcasing the Philippines' warm hospitality. After the ceremony, the MS AIDAstella sailed on to Coron, Palawan.
The return of cruise ships to the Philippines, carrying numerous tourists, began in the first half of 2023. To attract more visitors, the Philippine government introduced a cruise visa waiver program last year, simplifying entry for international cruise passengers.
