BRISK SALES OF JALUR GEMILANG AND SARAWAK STATE FLAG IN KUCHING

Kuching is seeing brisk sales of the Jalur Gemilang and Sarawak state flag with less than eight days to the National Day celebration on Aug 31, followed by Malaysia Day on Sept 16.

A Bernama survey around the city found all government buildings and shops festooned with both flags, proudly displaying the community’s patriotism.

Farahana Firdaus Affendi, 28, a saleswoman at a supermarket said sales have been very encouraging since last month in conjunction with Sarawak Day.

She said daily sales have reached more than 30 flags of all sizes, especially the Jalur Gemilang, for indoor, outdoor, residential, and business premises.

“We have restocked the flags twice this month because there is a steady stream of demand. Although each customer is not buying many flags, the volume of customers is big,” she told Bernama here.

Meanwhile, Mohd Saufie Ibrahim, 22, who works at a stationery shop, said sales have been very good and lately, most customers coming to the shop have been teachers.

“Maybe the schools are having National Month decoration competitions as they buy small and medium-sized flags.

“The best seller is the small hand-held flags. Last month, it was the Sarawak flag and this month it is the Malaysian flag. So far, we have enough stock of both types,” he said.

Marilyn Edward Lai, who happened to be in the shop at the time, said she was buying 10 big and 10 small Jalur Gemilang and Sarawak state flags for her village.

“This year, our village decided to decorate our community hall together, for National Day and Malaysia Day.

“We are also having a telematch on Aug 31 to strengthen the communal spirit among the villagers,” said Marilyn, who is from Kampung Sampun, Kota Samarahan.

This year’s National Day and Malaysia Day, themed ‘Malaysia MADANI: Tekad Perpaduan Penuhi Harapan’ is set to be celebrated with various programmes to reflect the concept of Malaysia MADANI through dance and music performances, as well as aerobatics and parades by security forces.

Sarawak has also been chosen as the host for the 2023 national-level Malaysia Day celebrations on Sept 16 at the Stadium Perpaduan here.
