BuCor’s Palawan Mega Ecozone Approved to Boost Economic Growth

Palawan: The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) announced that the recent approval of the Palawan Mega Ecozone by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) is a key step in repurposing underutilized land within the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) into industrial estates in the province.

According to Philippines News Agency, BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. expressed gratitude to PEZA for approving the project, which sets the stage for creating the first mega eco-industrial zone in the country. Catapang highlighted this development as a milestone in the nation's growth, supported by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.

The initiative signifies a partnership between PEZA and BuCor to transform underutilized land within the penal colony into eco-friendly industrial estates. The first phase of the project encompasses 28,000 hectares, with 4,000 hectares earmarked for immediate development.

Catapang emphasized that the Palawan Mega Ecozone's successful implementation could integrate sustainable practices within industrial frameworks, fostering economic resilience in the region. He noted that the ecozone aims to transform IPPF into a facility that balances economic growth, sustainability, and modern correctional reform.

The project's modernization and redevelopment plans include world-class infrastructure, commercial hubs, mixed-use districts, institutional zones, eco-tourism, and agro-industrial projects. This initiative is expected to unlock significant economic opportunities while maintaining socio-environmental responsibility, positioning it as a prime investment destination.

Catapang also mentioned that the project's strategic location, abundant land, and strong government support could redefine urban planning, green energy solutions, and economic zones, setting a benchmark for sustainable development in the country.

In a previous statement, PEZA described the Palawan Mega Ecozone as a venture aimed at attracting environmentally responsible industries, such as agro-industrial processing, renewable energy, eco-tourism, and marine biotechnology. This initiative intends not only to preserve Palawan's biodiversity but also to enhance local communities' livelihoods through job creation and infrastructure development.
