Bukidnon LGUs suspend classes due to LPA

Information

Several local government units (LGUs) in Bukidnon province suspended classes Wednesday in all levels as a preventive measure against the heavy downpours brought by a low-pressure area (LPA).

Based on executive orders and advisories, the LGUs of Valencia City and the towns of Maramag, Pangantucan, Don Carlos, Maramag, and Quezon underscored the importance of preparedness and proactive measures to protect schoolchildren from weather-related disasters.

In a memorandum order dated Wednesday, Valencia City Mayor Azucena Huervas said the LPA may cause flash floods and landslides in disaster-prone areas of the city.

“Our CDRRMO (City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office) is taking precautions and monitoring the raising of water levels in Pulangi river and its tributaries,” Huervas said.

Meanwhile, Maramag Mayor Jose Joel Doromal suspended work in government offices and recommended that private establishments suspend their operations temporarily.

“They (private companies) are to take all precautionary measures to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall and to prioritize the safety of employees,” Doromal said in his executive order.

Tuesday’s advisory of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s Mindanao Regional Services Division (Mindanao-PRSD) said some parts of Bukidnon province were placed under the yellow warning level.

The warning level was lifted by 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Mindanao-PRSD, however, advised that the province may still experience possible flooding and heavy rains due to the LPA.

Major cities in the Northern Mindanao region like Iligan and this city were also advised to conduct constant monitoring, especially in rivers and their tributaries.

Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia instructed barangay officials Wednesday to conduct preparedness measures and install constant flood warning alerts.

Moreover, the CDRRMO-Oro Rescue of the city government said their rescue personnel have been alerted for possible flooding, although the monitoring as of Wednesday noon showed that the major rivers of Iponan and Cagayan still have normal water levels.
