CAAP Issues Reminders for Holy Week Exodus

Manila: The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) issued reminders on Monday in time for the expected influx this Holy Week. All 44 CAAP-operated airports are on heightened alert, with additional personnel deployed to assist travelers. CAAP said security and baggage screening procedures have been intensified. Medical and emergency teams are on standby to respond to incidents.

According to Philippines News Agency, the public is advised to refrain from bringing sharp objects, flammable items, and oversized liquids in carry-on luggage, and should not leave their baggage unattended. Travelers are also advised to pack power banks in hand-carry bags, ensuring these meet capacity limits. Passengers must arrive at the airport at least three hours before flights, allowing ample time for check-in and security screening. They must also verify flight details and airline advisories before heading to the airport. The CAAP also reminded the public that making bomb jokes is considered a criminal offense.

'We anticipate high passenger volume during Semana Santa and have made the necessary preparations to ensure safe and efficient airport operations,' CAAP Director General Raul Del Rosario said in a statement. The CAAP urged all passengers to observe travel guidelines and protocols for a safe, orderly, and efficient journey.

Meanwhile, Senator Grace Poe laid out key improvements that must be in place at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) ahead of the anticipated Holy Week travel surge, urging authorities to prioritize passenger comfort and operational efficiency. Among Poe's top recommendations were clean restrooms, fully functioning air-conditioning units, and reliable power and water supply across the country's main gateway.

'Passenger comfort is not rocket science. These are not luxuries but basic requirements,' she said in a statement on Monday. Poe also called for the smooth operation of E-Gates and baggage systems to prevent unnecessary delays. She underscored the need for adequate staffing at check-in counters, baggage handling, immigration, and security screening areas, alongside sufficient medical and customer service personnel to assist in case of disruptions. Poe said oversight remains essential, urging the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to closely coordinate with airport authorities, the PNP Aviation Security Group, airlines, and ground service providers to ensure orderly and safe passenger movement.
