Caloocan Police: Arrest Has No Link to Student’s Leptospirosis Death

Caloocan: The Caloocan City Police Station (CCPS) clarified on Tuesday that it has no involvement in the death of a 20-year-old student who reportedly succumbed to leptospirosis after wading through floodwaters while searching for his father, who had been arrested for a minor gambling violation.

According to Philippines News Agency, the CCPS issued a statement following the viral spread of news about the student's death on social media since July 27. The police emphasized that the death due to leptospirosis was unrelated to the father's arrest. Verified reports and timelines indicate that the health incident occurred in circumstances unrelated to the police operation.

The social media post also accused CCPS personnel of non-compliance with police procedures, particularly failing to notify the family during the arrest, and questioned the recommendation regarding bail. The youth's father was arrested on July 22 for playing cara y cruz, with his family informed only on July 25.

The CCPS addressed the issue of arrest notification, stating their commitment to upholding procedures and respecting citizens' rights. They encouraged filing formal complaints if any personnel failed to inform relatives during the arrest. Allegations of misconduct will be thoroughly investigated, and necessary disciplinary actions will be undertaken if appropriate.

The police station clarified that bail recommendations and subsequent temporary release decisions lie with the Prosecutor's Office and the court, and not within the Philippine National Police's authority or influence. The CCPS reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law and apprehending violators as required.

Furthermore, the CCPS urged the public to exercise discernment and responsibility in sharing information online to prevent misinformation and unnecessary public concern.
