Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Monday that participation in election debates is not mandatory for national and local candidates. This decision applies to the upcoming May 12 mid-term elections.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia clarified in an interview that the current guidelines do not require candidates to attend debates, as the commission is still reviewing the constitutionality of such a mandate. He also mentioned that Comelec will not be organizing debates, leaving that responsibility to other groups and organizations.

Garcia emphasized that while Comelec is not conducting these debates, it is crucial for organizers to ensure that all candidates are invited to participate. "Not even one candidate should be excluded. Everyone must be invited," he stated. This directive aims to maintain fairness and inclusivity in the electoral process.

On Sunday, Comelec released guidelines for the conduct of political debates on television and radio. These guidelines are intended to ensure fairness and neutrality, underscoring the importance of political debates as necessary tools "in fostering the emergence of a fully informed electorate."
