Caraga Region Experiences Minor Damage from Earthquakes and Weather Disturbances

Caraga: The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the Caraga Region (RDRRMC-13) has reported minor damage to public infrastructure due to two moderate earthquakes and weather disturbances. The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.3 and 5.6, struck Agusan del Sur and Siargao Island, respectively, causing cracks in walls and ceilings of several government structures. Despite these damages, all facilities remained operational, and no significant harm to homes or livelihoods was recorded.

According to Philippines News Agency, the first earthquake occurred on December 26 at 6:26 p.m., with its epicenter in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur. The tremor was felt at Intensity IV in Bislig City and Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur. Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) conducted by local disaster management offices revealed minor damages, such as cracks in public markets, municipal offices, and other essential facilities. A subsequent earthquake on December 28 had its epicenter 35 kilometers southeast of General Luna in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, impacting about 5,803 families. However, no severe damage was reported.

The RDRRMC-13 also noted the effects of weather disturbances from the shear line and intertropical convergence zone since December 25. These disturbances resulted in minor landslides in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte, which temporarily blocked roads but were swiftly cleared by local authorities. Flooding in three villages in Bacuag was also reported but subsided within the day, causing minimal disruption to daily activities.
