Manila: Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday denied reports of an alleged coup plot in the Senate, saying both the majority and minority blocs should focus on the ongoing flood control investigation instead of engaging in political speculation. Cayetano dismissed rumors of a leadership change within the chamber, saying there were "no active efforts or signature drives" to unseat Senate President Vicente Sotto III.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cayetano noted there is no active campaigning or gathering of signatures similar to previous events. In a media briefing, he mentioned that recent discussions among senators have centered on strengthening the Blue Ribbon Committee's work and ensuring transparency in the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), rather than on potential internal power shifts. The senator also shared that he had spoken with Sotto, who reassured him that the majority remains united.
Cayetano highlighted that any supposed leadership movement is not occurring at present, emphasizing that while such rumors are common in politics, they are unfounded at this time. He clarified that any friendly interactions among senators do not equate to talks of a leadership change within the minority. Cayetano stressed the importance of senators maintaining focus on their oversight duties, especially concerning the multibillion-peso flood control scandal.
Cayetano remarked on the significant challenges facing the country, asserting that the Senate should act as a source of guidance and solutions rather than contribute to the issues. He underscored that unity, rather than rivalry, is crucial to rebuilding confidence in government and maintaining the Senate's role as a guardian of democracy during challenging times.
