Cagayan de oro: This city's 1st District Rep. Lordan Suan is keen on tackling disinformation in aid of legislation, making it one of his top priorities in the 20th Congress.
According to Philippines News Agency, in an interview Thursday, Suan said that after being appointed to lead the Committee on Public Information, he recognized the urgent need to revisit the issue of disinformation, which can make the public gullible. "One of the challenges of leading this committee is figuring out how to combat 'fake news,' disinformation, and misinformation, especially on social media," he said.
During the 19th Congress, Suan highlighted the problem of disinformation in a committee hearing after being targeted by a local disinformation campaign that persisted through the midterm elections.
The Committee on Public Information oversees all matters related to public information and mass communication. This includes various media types like print, broadcast, movies, television, videos, advertising, cable, internet, and the roles of industry workers. Suan, who is also a lawyer, noted that efforts to curb disinformation will not infringe on the Constitutional rights to freedom of expression and of the press.
