Manila: The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) on Monday voiced its opposition to the proposed removal of Ethics from the college curriculum. CEAP emphasized the importance of Ethics in fostering good moral thinking among young adults.
According to Philippines News Agency, CEAP stated that while basic education introduces ethical principles, the complexity of moral dilemmas faced in adulthood requires a deeper engagement with ethical frameworks. The organization highlighted that college is a crucial period for young adults to refine their values and make significant life decisions. Removing Ethics from higher education would deprive students of the opportunity to ground their choices in moral reasoning and Gospel values.
CEAP further noted that the Church supports the notion that moral formation should be ongoing and progressive, not something that concludes after high school. The association stressed that colleges and universities have a responsibility to equip students with not only technical knowledge but also moral wisdom capable of transforming society.
The organization underscored that in educational institutions, where the goal extends beyond mere information to transformation, Ethics is a fundamental component. The Department of Education (DepEd) had earlier proposed the removal of Ethics, along with Art Appreciation and Contemporary World, from the college curriculum, suggesting their inclusion in the revised senior high school program instead.
