Cebu Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 79, NDRRMC Reports

Bogo: The reported death toll due to the Sept. 30 magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Bogo City, Cebu has climbed to 79 on Friday, according to official government tally. In its latest update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said all the fatalities are reported in Region 7 (Central Visayas).

According to Philippines News Agency, the NDRRMC reported that 559 people were injured, all in Central Visayas. The figures are all subject for validation. The report also indicated that 216,947 families, or 747,979 persons, from 260 barangays in the same region are affected by the earthquake.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development, along with non-government organizations, have provided PHP419,207,045 worth of assistance and distributed 443,340 food packs to the affected families. The earthquake resulted in 126,934 houses being damaged and 7,295 destroyed, the NDRRMC stated.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) attributed the Sept. 30 Cebu earthquake to the "on-land extension of the newly-named Bogo Bay Fault." President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had earlier visited the damaged communities in Bogo City to inspect infrastructure and meet with affected families as the government enhances relief, rehabilitation, and service restoration efforts.
