CFO Urges Stronger Engagement with Filipino Diaspora

Manila: The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is advocating for a robust and inclusive strategy to engage the Filipino diaspora, emphasizing that overseas Filipinos are not solely remittance providers but also active contributors to national progress.

According to Philippines News Agency, CFO Chairperson Secretary Dante 'Klink' Ang II, speaking at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing, underscored the diverse impact of the Filipino diaspora. He highlighted their role in promoting Philippine culture, enhancing international demand for local products, and producing pioneers in various fields such as science, media, and public service globally.

Ang remarked that Filipinos abroad act as ambassadors for the Philippines and contribute to opening trade opportunities. He noted that the demand for Philippine products increases due to the large number of Filipinos living abroad. Additionally, Ang addressed the common perception of overseas Filipinos primarily as remittance senders, explaining that while a substantial portion of remittances comes from overseas workers, a significant share originates from the broader overseas Filipino community, which contributes around 10% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He highlighted the CFO's Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL) program, which has facilitated over PHP3.4 billion in donations and investments from overseas communities over the past decade. Ang acknowledged that many contributions remain undocumented, especially those made through private channels or directly to beneficiaries.

Ang also mentioned the 'Balikturo' program under LINKAPIL, which allows Filipino teachers based in the United States to return to the Philippines for teaching visits. Additionally, there are plans to expand partnerships with the Department of Science and Technology under the Balik Scientist Program.

He emphasized that the contributions of overseas Filipinos extend beyond remittances, highlighting their value as human capital and cultural contributors. The CFO initiatives aim to shift the perception of overseas Filipinos from merely workers to innovators, knowledge providers, and leaders.

Furthermore, Ang shared the CFO's intention to collaborate with creative overseas Filipinos to help diaspora youth connect with their Filipino heritage in meaningful and contemporary ways.
