KUANTAN, The Royal Pahang Weave (Tenun Pahang Diraja), often reserved for official events and weddings, has however, found a new avenue since it was showcased by Pahang Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) director, Colonel (PA) Che Adam A Rahman at the Everest Base Camp (EBC). Dressed in a black Baju Melayu ensemble, complete with a kris, tanjak and samping made from Royal Pahang silk fabric, he said that this effort was aimed at promoting the image and culture of Pahang while participating in the EBC climbing expedition from Sept 9 to 25. Sharing the challenges he faced while wearing the full Baju Melayu attire upon arriving at the base camp at exactly 11.10 am local time (1.25 pm Malaysian time) on Sept 18, Che Adam, 49, said climbers had to contend with extremely cold temperatures ranging from -1 to 1 degree Celsius at an altitude of 5,364 metres. "After eight days of climbing, we successfully reached EBC, and I had the opportunity to wear my complete Baju Melayu. Alhamdulillah, everything went smoothl y, although there were several difficult challenges during the ascent, including the terrain itself. "In addition to the long hours of climbing, the cold weather and thinning oxygen levels at 3,500 metres were also significant challenges and experiences that I will never forget," said the colonel who has been active in climbing activities since 1997. Che Adam was among 38 Malaysian climbers who successfully reached the EBC as part of an expedition commemorating the 65th birthday of the Sultan of Pahang, involving participants from various agencies, including the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, staff from the office of the Sultan of Pahang, and media practitioners.
