Manila: The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has clarified that the proposed Reframed General Education (GE) Curriculum is "not yet final" and remains open for revisions. This announcement was made after the proposal garnered significant attention during an online public hearing, which attracted over 4,700 viewers via Facebook livestream and 1,400 participants on Zoom.
According to Philippines News Agency, CHED emphasized that all feedback will be taken into account as part of the ongoing consultation process. "The Commission stressed that the proposed reframed GE curriculum is not yet final and remains subject to the ongoing consultation process with higher education institutions, faculty, students, professional organizations, and other education stakeholders," CHED stated.
One key aspect of the proposed changes that has drawn both interest and criticism is the proposed reduction of 36 GE units to either 18 or 21, along with the integration of subjects such as ethics, philosophy, arts, literature, and Philippine history. CHED highlighted that the reframing process will continue to incorporate feedback from education stakeholders as a crucial part of its deliberations.
CHED also committed to engaging stakeholders through additional consultation mechanisms, ensuring that any final policy reflects careful study, meaningful participation, and aligns with the best interests of Filipino learners and higher education. It assured that the reframing will be "evidence-based" and meet national priorities and global standards.
All position papers and formal comments submitted to CHED will be reviewed by the Technical Panel for General Education (TPGE), which was reconstituted in September 2024 to align the Senior High School and General Education curricula. The TPGE's recommendations have been presented to the commission en banc following a series of reviews and initial consultations with education stakeholders, CHED confirmed.
