Manila: Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula on Saturday called on the faithful to stay vigilant, sober, and discerning amidst growing social and political tensions in the country. In his pastoral statement titled 'A Call for Vigilance, Sobriety, and Discernment,' Advincula emphasized the importance of not letting emotions override reason and firmly upholding the rule of law.

According to Philippines News Agency, Advincula instructed that the statement be read at Masses starting the evening of November 15 and throughout all Sunday services on November 16. "In moments of mass gatherings and public discourse, we do not let emotion prevail over reason. We must always adhere to the rule of law and resist any calls for extra-constitutional means to solve our problems. Our loyalty must be to our country and its democratic principles, not to persons, and certainly not to ambition," he said.

Furthermore, Advincula expressed that the Church stands with the nation through persistent prayer and collective action for renewal. Citing the Oratio Imperata, he prayed, "In this time when shadows of deceit and corruption cloud our land. shine upon us Your light that scatters all darkness."

Meanwhile, in a parallel development, the Archdiocese of Cebu released a pastoral appeal on Saturday as investigations into alleged corruption involving flood control projects continue. Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy called for calm, restraint, and adherence to truth amidst competing claims and rising misinformation.

"This has created confusion and opened the door to misinformation. I appeal to everyone to remain calm, peaceful, and focused on the truth," Uy stated. He advocated for a transparent and impartial investigation, insisting, "No whitewashing. No cover-ups. No protection for anyone involved. Those found guilty must face the law, and stolen funds must be returned to the people."

Archbishop Uy also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to reject narratives that incite anger, division, or fear. He strongly condemned any violent or unlawful responses to the controversy. Finally, Uy asked the faithful to pray for clarity, courage, and justice: "For truth to be revealed, for courage to guide our leaders, and for justice and peace to heal our nation."
