Manila: The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a warning about disinformation circulating on social media, which falsely depicts President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. endorsing an online trading platform.
According to Philippines News Agency, the misleading video was uploaded to Facebook by a page named 'Inquirer PH Insider,' which previously operated under the name 'Deborah Webb.' The page is reportedly managed from overseas and includes a link that directs users to an unrelated e-commerce site.
A technical review conducted by the CICC revealed that the video utilized deepfake technology and artificial intelligence-based manipulation techniques to fabricate President Marcos' endorsement. This digital deception aims to exploit public trust by merging the image of a national leader with recognizable media branding, potentially leading people towards what could be a fraudulent scheme presented as a financial opportunity.
The original video has since been removed from Facebook following coordination with the social media platform. The CICC continues to monitor similar threats and urges the public to critically evaluate claims made in online advertisements, especially those involving public figures, exaggerated promises, or unverifiable platforms.
