Closer Gov’t-Private Sector Tie-Up to Figure Out Pros, Cons of AI

Manila: With the evolving ways on how to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to improve systems and services, along with how scammers are using this for their operations, a closer coordination between the government and the private sector is needed to ensure public safety.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ryan Flores, Threat Research Director of security software firm Trend Micro Inc., emphasized during a briefing that companies are increasingly adopting AI-related systems, while governments are focused on creating a conducive environment for this technological advancement. Flores noted that businesses, both locally and internationally, feel pressured to integrate AI as their competitors are already implementing these technologies.

Flores highlighted that governments are still in the process of exploring the necessary policies for the safe adoption, deployment, and ethical use of AI. He stressed that these measures should not be solely the responsibility of the government but should involve dialogue and collaboration with organizations and all stakeholders.

"So, I think it's up to the organizations to also be on top of these things . We are living on very fast times. I think everyone should just be also trying to run as fast as we can and keep abreast of all these things," Flores stated. He further explained that the government can play a crucial role by exerting pressure on AI developers and vendors, while also educating the public about the new technology and its safe handling.

Trend Micro Inc. PH country director Ian Felipe added that the government could enhance the safe use of AI by fostering collaborations with private organizations involved in AI development. Felipe suggested that private firms with extensive AI research could assist by sharing information that could help the government educate the public effectively.
