Manila: The frequency of talks for a code of conduct (COC) in the South China Sea will continue and is unaffected by the adjustments being implemented for the in-person meetings under the Philippine chairship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday. In a text message, DFA Spokesperson for ASEAN Affairs Dax Imperial stated that "discussions and engagements on COC negotiations, as well as other agenda items within ASEAN, will continue."

According to Philippines News Agency, the streamlining of meetings is being done in response to the energy emergency. While there is a focus on the most pressing issues, efforts continue on other important areas for both the country and the region. China and ASEAN are intensifying efforts to expedite the conclusion of the COC, including holding monthly in-person meetings, aiming to finalize talks by 2026.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. confirmed that the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Cebu, scheduled for May 8 and 9, will proceed. The discussions will prioritize urgent regional issues such as energy security, food security, and matters concerning migrant workers. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto announced that all ASEAN-related preparatory meetings in the Philippines would transition to a virtual format as the country aims to reduce non-essential bloc activities to conserve resources and concentrate on critical issues.
