Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) continues to prepare for the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) while the bill extending the terms for village and youth officials is waiting for the signature of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia stated in an interview on Tuesday that the poll body has decided to make adjustments in the preparation of election materials for the December 1 polls. The adjustments include omitting the specific election date from essential forms such as official ballots, statements of votes, election returns, and minutes of voting.
Garcia explained that the absence of a signed law postponing the BSKE has prompted this decision. He emphasized the risk of running out of time in their preparations if the anticipated postponement does not occur. By not specifying a date on the materials, Comelec aims to ensure that these resources remain usable should the elections be rescheduled.
The proposed measure to extend the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials has already been approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If President Marcos Jr. signs it into law, the BSKE would be moved from December 1, 2025, to the first Monday of November 2026, extending the officials' terms from three to four years.
