Comelec Approaches 1 Million Voter Registrants Amid Nationwide Campaign

Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is approaching its ambitious target of 1 million voter registrants during a 10-day nationwide registration drive that commenced on August 1.

According to Philippines News Agency, data from the poll body as of Monday indicates a total of 888,042 applicants countrywide. Central Luzon leads with 208,398 registrants, followed by Calabarzon with 102,235. The National Capital Region ranks third with 64,131 registrants, while the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) has the fewest with 12,987 applicants.

The highest number of applications was received on August 4, marking Day 4 of the registration, with 262,593 individuals signing up. Comelec Chairperson George Garcia expressed confidence in meeting or exceeding the target, noting the overwhelming turnout at registration sites across the Philippines.

Garcia remarked in an interview on Tuesday that despite uncertainties about the elections proceeding, citizens continue to register in large numbers. He emphasized that this registration period, set to conclude on August 10, is shaping up to be the most successful in history, achieving the highest number of registrants in the shortest timeframe.
