Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has voiced its support for the enactment of a law aimed at curtailing political dynasties in the country. This was announced by Comelec Chairperson George Garcia, who emphasized the importance of such legislation in ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution and equal opportunities for public service.
According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia stated, "We will support any initiative that will put an end to political dynasty." He further elaborated on the necessity of maintaining the Constitution's authority and stressed that public office should be accessible to anyone with a desire to serve the nation. "The importance is unparalleled. Equal opportunity for public service must be guaranteed," Garcia added.
The statement from Comelec comes in the wake of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to Congress to prioritize anti-corruption measures, including a proposed bill that targets the elimination of political dynasties. This legislative push is part of a broader effort to implement key reforms in the country's political landscape.
In response to the President's directive, Bishop Pablo Cardinal David expressed his approval. He noted on social media that there was a prevailing impression that the government might dissolve the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) and delegate responsibilities to the Ombudsman. However, he welcomed the unexpected decision from Malaca±ang to focus on important reform measures, describing it as a "most welcome direction."
