Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has called on Congress to hasten the passage of an anti-dynasty law. Comelec Chairman George Garcia emphasized the urgency of this legislative action during an interview, highlighting its significance ahead of the upcoming electoral events.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia expressed the desire for lawmakers to finalize the legislation before the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the May 2028 national and local elections, scheduled for September 2027. He noted the potential impact of the proposed law on the political landscape, and the need for comprehensive preparation.

Garcia outlined the challenging process of implementing such a transformative law. He emphasized the necessity for developing implementing rules and regulations (IRR) that are clear and concise. He acknowledged the complexity of the task, which involves understanding legislative intent and creating subordinate legislation.

Despite the challenges, Garcia affirmed Comelec's readiness to enforce the law once enacted, expressing support for the Supreme Court's directive to Congress to enact the law as mandated by the Constitution. He expressed hope for the realization of a genuine anti-dynasty law, which has been a part of the government's legislative agenda since December 2025.
