Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is nearly finished with its preparations for the May 12 national and local elections (NLE). Chairperson George Garcia stated in a radio interview that Comelec is "about 90 to 95 percent prepared" while Board of Election Inspectors' members are undergoing training.
According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia mentioned that the ballots are ready, with only the verification process remaining. The Voter's Information Sheet (VIS) is scheduled to complete printing by March 25. Additionally, training for teachers, who will serve as election inspectors, is ongoing. The public has the option to enroll in internet voting, with a link already available for registration.
Security measures are also being reinforced, as Garcia highlighted the deployment of security forces by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police across various regions. He urged the public to report any National and Local Elections (NLE) candidates violating Comelec rules, such as engaging in vote buying or posting campaign materials in unauthorized locations.
Garcia assured that even without a formal complaint, Comelec would investigate and file cases against violators. He also advised candidates to be vigilant about their opponents who might attempt to sabotage their campaigns and urged them to report such incidents promptly. The campaign period for local candidates is set to begin on March 28, with all campaign activities concluding on May 10.
