Comelec Reschedules Voter Registration to Late October

Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced a change in the schedule for the voter registration period for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). Originally planned for July, the registration has now been moved to late October.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia stated that the delay is to accommodate the first-ever Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections (BPE) scheduled for October 13. Garcia explained that the initial 11-day registration period was deemed insufficient and could potentially confuse Bangsamoro voters, as it might interfere with their participation in the BPE. The new registration period is set to begin in the last week of October and will continue until July 2026.

Garcia emphasized that Comelec will continue preparations for the BSKE, which is planned for December 1, pending any legislative changes. He expressed concern about halting preparations, noting potential complications if the postponement law is not signed or if legal challenges arise, such as a temporary restraining order from the Supreme Court.

The Senate and the House of Representatives recently ratified a report extending the term of incumbent barangay and SK officials. The proposed law aims to extend the term of office for these officials from three to four years. Garcia mentioned that procurement activities will proceed, albeit with certain conditions.
