Manila: The number of checkpoints is set to increase as the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliamentary Elections (BPE) draws near, an official from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco indicated that additional checkpoints might be established in the region in preparation for the September 14 elections. The number of checkpoints has already risen to nearly 25,000 from last week's 18,000. This measure comes after an ambush attempt on August 15 involving BARMM Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua and his companions in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, by still unidentified suspects.
"Even if we consider this an election-related incident, we hope it remains an isolated one. Verification efforts in the BARMM are ongoing," Laudiangco stated in an interview. He further explained that the extensive number of checkpoints is due to the vast geographical area of the BARMM, with a checkpoint at nearly every street corner.
Laudiangco also issued a reminder to the region's residents to adhere strictly to the gun ban, following the apprehension of several violators. "Fifteen individuals were apprehended and over 20 firearms were seized. All cases have undergone inquest proceedings. The standard procedure involves arrest, the reading of rights, evidence collection, referral to prosecutors, and the filing of charges for violating Section 32 of RA (Republic Act) 7166 (Synchronized Election Act)," he detailed.
He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning residents not to treat the measures lightly. "If you do not have an exemption or a certificate of authority, do not carry a firearm. Checkpoints are waiting for you. Do not treat this as a joke. Violating the gun ban carries a penalty of one to six years imprisonment, the loss of the right to vote, and perpetual disqualification from holding public office," Laudiangco cautioned.
The gun ban in the region is in effect from July 16 to September 29, underscoring the heightened security measures as the elections approach.
