Negros Oriental: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Oriental has implemented contingency measures to address potential disruptions caused by floods or landslides during the national and local elections scheduled for May 12.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec-Negros Island Region Director Lionel Marco Castillano has instructed the Provincial Joint Security Control Center to develop plans to ensure the elections proceed without interruption, even in adverse weather conditions. This preparation follows a recent briefing with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which forecasted heavy rainfall for Negros Oriental starting in May.
Director Castillano emphasized the importance of these measures, noting that several voting centers are situated in the mountainous barangays of Ayungon, Tayasan, and Bindoy, which are prone to landslides. He recalled an incident during the last barangay elections where a Comelec transport truck became immobilized in mud, highlighting the need for thorough planning.
In the event of severe weather, the relocation of voting centers might be necessary, Castillano stated, while expressing hope for a smooth electoral process. He called on the community to pray for favorable weather conditions on May 12.
