Cop Under Investigation for Allegedly Firing Gun Amid Traffic: PNP

MANILA: A police officer in the Philippines may face charges following allegations of discharging a firearm in the midst of traffic in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig, prompting an investigation by the Philippine National Police (PNP), officials said. The incident, reportedly witnessed by ACT Teachers Party-list Representative France Castro, occurred on Wednesday night, sparking concerns over public safety and police conduct. According to Philippines News Agency, Castro recounted the event during a House Quad Committee hearing, claiming she saw the shooting from her car. PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo confirmed the investigation at a press briefing in Camp Crame, stating that if the officer is identified as the shooter, both criminal and administrative charges will be pursued. The incident involved two officers who exited their patrol car, positioned in front of Castro's vehicle, after a motorcycle approached them. One officer allegedly fired his gun in an area bustling with civilians, Castro report ed. In response, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) acting chief, Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin, instructed the Southern Police District (SPD) to ascertain whether the incident occurred along Makati Avenue or within BGC. Aberin emphasized that investigators are working to gather details and understand why no report was filed by the Makati City Police Station regarding the event. Consequently, the Makati City Police Station chief, the commander of Sub-station 6, and personnel involved will be relieved from duty to ensure an impartial investigation.
