Cordillera Residents Encouraged to Set Health and Nutrition Goals for 2026

Baguio: The Department of Health in Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CAR) has urged residents to set "new me" goals for a healthier lifestyle this year. Cherrie Caluza, Nurse V of the DOH-CAR, emphasized the importance of having a personal tracker with measurable goals during the 'Kapihan with CARE' event on Thursday, stating that such a tool is a 'big help' for individuals aiming to achieve good health.

According to Philippines News Agency, the tracker should include metrics such as average minutes of active lifestyle, strength sessions, sitting breaks achieved, smoke-free days, and alcohol-free days in a month. Caluza highlighted that this approach will help individuals monitor their accomplishments and identify areas for improvement to achieve their health goals.

Caluza cited a recent survey by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, revealing that 41.9 percent of Cordillera residents have sedentary lifestyles, compared to the national average of 45.2 percent. Additionally, the study indicated that 19 percent of adults in the region are smokers, while the national average stands at 25.4 percent. She urged the public to set cessation goals to prevent illnesses related to smoking and advised against excessive alcohol consumption, recommending limits on daily intake.

Caluza stressed that alcohol consumption is a contributing factor to over 3 million deaths worldwide annually, due to liver disease, increased blood pressure, road accidents, and other alcohol-related causes. She advised the public to engage in at least 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity weekly, along with regular standing time and daily steps.

Meanwhile, Sean Paul Fiangan, Nutritionist Dietician IV of the DOH-CAR, encouraged Filipinos to begin the year by being mindful of their food intake, particularly after the holiday season. He recommended using the Pinggang Pinoy guide for healthy eating, which varies by age and health condition. For a balanced diet, he advised filling half of an eight to nine-inch plate with 'Glow' foods like fruits and vegetables, one-third with 'Go' foods like carbohydrates, and the remaining portion with 'Grow' foods like protein.

Fiangan also emphasized the importance of hydration, suggesting a glass of water with every meal, and cautioned against excessive consumption of salty, sweet, and fatty foods, as they increase the risk of non-communicable diseases.
