Creation of Independent Body to Probe Flood Control Anomalies Imminent, Says Marcos

Manila: The creation of an independent body to investigate flood control anomalies will be finalized "very, very soon," President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced on Tuesday. He refrained from discussing further details until the plan is fully formed but assured that the establishment of the body is imminent.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos was responding to inquiries about the potential involvement of Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong in the independent panel that will investigate alleged irregularities in the implementation of flood control projects. Newly appointed Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon stated that the initial findings from the agency's internal committee would be handed over to the upcoming independent fact-finding body.

Dizon confirmed that the DPWH's internal investigation team for flood control projects would be dissolved within the day. He emphasized the President's decision to establish an independent commission and expressed his support for transferring the responsibility and authority to investigate to this new body.

Dizon acknowledged that the internal investigative committee was formed before any announcement was made about an independent commission. However, with the President's recent decision, Dizon expressed his respect for Marcos's judgment and committed to dissolving the internal team immediately.

Dizon also expressed openness to the inclusion of Mayor Magalong in the independent investigating body, calling it a "welcome development" if it happens. Magalong had previously submitted documents to President Marcos detailing alleged irregularities in flood mitigation projects.

In the coming days, Dizon plans to conduct site inspections in areas where flood control projects have been implemented, further emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing the issue.
