Surigao del norte: Several local government units (LGUs) in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands provinces have suspended classes due to the trough of Tropical Depression (TD) Crising. Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers issued a localized class suspension order for the province on Thursday morning.
According to Philippines News Agency, the order grants LGUs, from barangay up to city and municipal levels, the authority to suspend classes based on the advisories of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and their local assessment. Local school officials may also suspend classes under Department of Education Order 022, series of 2024, which revises guidelines for suspending classes during disasters and emergencies.
Daryll Gomez, chief of Surigao del Norte's disaster management operation center, explained in a local radio interview that when the province declares localized suspension of classes, it authorizes local chief executives or school heads to suspend classes if needed. As of Thursday, the Surigao del Norte LGUs of General Luna, Dapa, Santa Monica, Del Carmen, Claver, Placer, Sison, Mainit, Alegria, and Tubod have canceled classes from kindergarten to high school.
In Dinagat Islands, the LGUs of San Jose, Tubajon, Libjo, Basilisa, and Dinagat also suspended classes for the safety of schoolchildren.
