CWC Issues Warning Against Sharing Graphic Clips and Minors’ Details in Zamboanga Shooting

Zamboanga city: The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) on Tuesday urged the public and media to prioritize the safety, privacy, and protection of children affected by a shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School campus.

According to Philippines News Agency, the suspect, reportedly a Grade 9 student, opened fire, resulting in the fatal shooting of a Grade 10 student, injuring at least three others, and ultimately killing himself, as per initial reports. CWC Executive Director Undersecretary Angelo Tapales emphasized the long-term impact on children and families involved, stating that the safety, dignity, privacy, and welfare of the child must always come first.

The CWC is actively monitoring developments and coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure child protection and well-being are at the forefront of response efforts. The organization warned against the spread of unverified reports and graphic content, which can increase trauma and compromise ongoing investigations.

Media workers and content creators were reminded to adhere to guidelines on reporting involving children, stressing that the speed of information dissemination should never compromise child protection. The CWC highlighted the balance between public information rights and the rights of each child to privacy, dignity, security, and protection.

Tapales reiterated that whether a child is a victim, witness, or in conflict with the law, their rights must be safeguarded. For concerns involving abuse or threats against children, the public can contact the CWC MAKABATA 1383, available 24/7 through various communication channels.
