Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has approved the importation of 4,000 metric tons (MT) of onions in an effort to prevent a supply crisis similar to the one experienced in 2022. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the need for this measure to avoid a repeat of last year's situation, where retail prices of onions soared to PHP720 per kilogram due to a supply shortage.
According to Philippines News Agency, the approved importation consists of 3,000 MT of red onions and 1,000 MT of white onions, which are expected to arrive within the next two weeks. This importation is intended to bridge the gap while awaiting the local fresh harvest, as stated by Tiu Laurel. The initiative aims to prevent price exploitation by traders in the face of potential shortages.
Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Director Glenn Panganiban described the importation as a preventive measure designed to address possible supply gaps. Despite assurances from consultative meetings that the onion supply remains sufficient, the BPI recommended minimal imports to avert significant price increases.
As of January 31, the inventory levels indicated 2,325.86 MT of red onions and 631.45 MT of white onions in stock, according to BPI data. The monthly consumption rate for the country stands at approximately 17,000 MT for red onions and 4,000 MT for white onions.
