DA Chief Vows Completion of P132-Million Davao del Sur Fish Port by February 2027

Malalag: The PHP132.1 million Malalag Municipal Fish Port (MFP) in Barangay Baybay, Malalag, Davao del Sur, is expected to be completed by February 2027, the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) announced Monday. Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. inspected the site on July 13 to evaluate the progress and emphasize the project's significance in enhancing the country's fisheries sector. The project, implemented by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), has a total cost of PHP132.18 million.

According to Philippines News Agency, the first phase of the project, costing PHP37.31 million, has been successfully completed, while the second phase, with a budget of PHP94.87 million, is currently underway. The Malalag facility, located approximately 64.4 kilometers from the Davao Fish Port Complex, plays a crucial role as a landing and trading hub for the municipality and surrounding coastal communities. It is operated by the Malalag local government under a memorandum of agreement signed with the PFDA in October 2021, which stipulates a 15 percent retainer's fee from the gross operating income.

"This is part of our commitment to accelerate the development of fisheries infrastructure that can serve more people. The additional expansion will help ensure better-quality fishery products," Laurel stated, emphasizing the DA's dedication to modernizing fisheries infrastructure. Once the expansion is completed, the fish port is anticipated to enhance operations related to fish unloading, handling, storage, and trading, minimize post-harvest losses, and strengthen the fisheries value chain in Davao del Sur and adjacent areas.

Laurel also engaged with local fisherfolk, traders, and municipal officials to discuss the project's development and ensure that the infrastructure aligns with the needs of coastal communities. This visit highlights the DA's initiative to modernize fisheries facilities and promote food security as part of the Bagong Pilipinas agenda. The Malalag port is expected to improve market access, elevate income opportunities for fisherfolk, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable fisheries industry in the region.
